"Not since Herbert Hoover has a party out of power had such an opportunity to run against everything that troubles the American family—prices, interest rates, unemployment, taxes, or the fear for the future of their old age or the future of their children—than is now presented to the Republican Party."
If those word ring familiar they should. They were written by New York Times writer, the late Scotty Reston in 1980. Bill McGurn has a great article at the Wall Street Journal in which he draws similarities between the current crop of GOP candidates and Ronald Reagan. McGurn makes the point that Reagan scored his big successes as president not as a California governor. Like all of the the present candidates, Reagan had baggage and Gerald Ford remained popular. McGurn compares Ford to the dream non candidates, Christie, Daniels, or Jeb Bush who conventional wisdom dictates are the ideal candidates. Ford, the non candidate was much more popular than Reagan. A Harris Poll released just about this time in 1980 bolstered the case for Mr. Ford by reporting that, in a head-to-head match up, Ford would trounce President Carter 55% to 44%. The same poll showed Reagan trailing Carter 58% to 40%.
Wow. Your "art" is really...something.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious if you worship The Prince, Obama.
We don't idolize Reagan. We admired him. There's a difference. He was a magnificent man who led the country and the world toward freedom and the free market.
And if you're so crazy about commies, you oughta move somewhere that's closer to communism. We're getting there fast enough.
