North Dakota May Be Third Largest Oil Producer

M.J. Perry has been one of the the most consistent "Drill Baby, Drill" proponents in the blogosphere. The University of Michigan professor's blog, Carpe Diem offers a wealth of energy information served with free market philosophy in lucid, easy to understand prose. Almost daily Carpe Diem reports another another remarkable fact about the development of the Bakken Shale. Today Perry is reporting that North Dakota may have passed California as the third largest producer of crude oil behind only Alaska and Texas.

Notice the slope of the line from 2009 to date. When President Obama says there is more oil production now than when he took office much of that oil come from North Dakota's privately owned land. Drilling activity is up 70% on private land and down 30% on public land. Currently there are 195 rigs working in the Bakken. More than one industry expert now say that North America could be energy independent in five years. Some also add that the US has the potential to pay down every dollar of the national debt from royalties it would earn by actively leasing drilling rights both off shore and on federal lands. Newt Gingrich will be hitting this theme hard in the next few weeks. Let's hope his vision continues no matter who wins the nomination. How does Secretary of Interior Sarah Palin sound?
