Public Sponsored Protests
The Occupy movement has been co-opted and I'm not thinking of the handful of anarchists who are always roundly denounced but somehow always present. The Occupy movement has been co-opted by the political class. The same alliances among Democratic politicians, SEIU, ACORN that brought the economic havoc in 2008 is back for an encore. Consider a few facts coming out of Oakland. The city council is currently considering a resolution to give a more or less permanent home to the movement on public property. Across most of the country Occupiers have taken over public areas while the political class could only express "understanding and respect for many fine young people" while it turned a blind eye to the occupation on public parks. Mayor Jean Quan gave public workers the day off to vandalize private property. The data is in and 18% of the city's employees and 5% of its school teachers took personal time off to participate in the general strike. While we are constantly reminded that the vandalism was the work of a very few we know of no instance when the noble many did anything to stop it. Last week her honor, Mayor Quan, was in Washington trying to secure more funding for the very port that she allowed demonstrators to shut down. Enough already! This movement is just media event designed to prop up a corrupt political class. Class warfare? Yes, but it's the political class against the working class.
