The original date on this blog entry over at ABC is May 27; not too many news outlets have picked up on it. When asked yesterday about the Jones Act and the fact that the US government has rejected most offers of assistance, such as booms, expertise, skimmers, etc., a Democrat operative scoffed, saying, "You wouldn't want Iran's ships in US waters, would you?" Note that in this article, Iran was specifically mentioned as not having offered help to the US. Of course, assistance could be accepted on a case by case basis, waiving the Jones Act, which was originally written to protect US union jobs.
On May 6, the Coast Guard issued a statement saying the aid was "not needed." At first the CG refused to identify the countries who offered help. Some countries' offers never received responses. The Coast Guard is looking increasingly inadequate in these news reports:
