Is Akin That Bad?

Is the Republican Party going to lose the Missouri senate seat at all cost? Ideally Todd Akin will agree to step aside. There is a compromise being negotiated that will allow Akin to run for the congress in his old district while that candidate, Ann Wagner, assumes the senate slot. If Akin can get over his ego this would seem to be a plausible solution to the Missouri mess. But suppose Akin doesn't blink? Is the national Republican Party going to sit on its hands and let the seat stay in the Democratic column? The party has made the argument that the seat is essential so when does it make good sense to throw it away? Yes, we've heard the bluster. No, he won't get a dime. Promise? This reminds me of the Joe Wilson affair. When Wilson shouted "You lie" in response to an Obama lie he was all but hanged, drawn, and quartered by his own party. He was forced to apologize and was deemed to be persona non grata by all right thinking and civil people up until the uncivilized among us donated over a million dollars to his campaign. Todd Akin has misspoke himself rather badly but he has apologized. Are the voters of Missouri that unforgiving? No decision has to be made until late September and politicians are always prone to putting off decisions until the last possible minute but if Akin says he earned the right to run and no he won't step aside I suspect the Republican Party is going to have a change of heart. If Akin can issue a nationwide plea for help from fellow born again evangelists my guess is he will take in enough money to fund his campaign. Then he can tell the Republican Party to go to hell. Claire McCaskill has built up plenty of bad will over the last 6 years both with her voting and her personal corruption scandals. I think Akin can win this race. Obamacare lost big when it was a ballot question in Missouri. After some reflection  the voters will probably side with Akin.
