Santorum Tops PPP National Poll

Riding the surge from his triple win last week Rick Santorum has opened a commanding lead on the GOP field. In the latest PPP poll Santorum wins with 38%, Romney places with 23%, Gingrich shows with 17%. and Paul runs out of the money with 13%. By adhering to political principles and avoiding personal attacks in his campaign, Santorum has established an impressive " favorability" rating among Republican voters. Sixty-four percent of GOP voters have a favorable opinion of Santorum with only 22% viewing him unfavorably. In this area Romney is a little better than even and Gingrich is underwater with a 42% positive /44% negative rating.

Once favored only by social conservatives and evangelicals Santorum can now hit to all fields. He wins the Tea Party vote going away with 51% followed by Gingrich with 24% and Romney's 12%.

The best thing Romney might have going for him right now is Gingrich's continued presence in the race. If Gingrich dropped out 58% of his supporters say they would move to Santorum, while 22% would go to Romney and 17% to Paul. Santorum gets to 50% in the Newt free field to 28% for Romney and 15% for Paul.
