Ask yourself what the people who are occupying Wall Street need, aside from a marketable set of job skill, an iota of ambition, and a hot bath. Drifting away from the purely temporal necessities, readers old enough to remember the sixties can tell you that this revolution lacks three essentials; music, intellect, and sex. Geez, there's more free love at a Tea Party rally than there is in Zuccotti Park. Not only no sex there are no couples even holding hands. Where is their Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Melanie, Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, Rolling Stones, or Beatles? These sorry losers couldn't handle musac! While not all hippies were intellectual giants they at least looked to someone other than themselves for moral authority. Yes, we all got tired of hearing about Voltaire, I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. Sartre was for really serious intellectuals, but even names like Teilhard de Chardin and Emanuel Kant were quoted from time to time. Our generation knew morality came from reason and virtue and that civilization was built on the goodness and greatness of a few great minds. We never deluded ourselves into thinking it was intuitive.
So what do we get from OWS crowd. We get nothing but puerile, vain, and ostentatious egocentrism. Gainful employment is the least of their needs. They have no love, no intellect and no music because they have no mind, no heart, and no soul.
Whatcha mean about no free love on Wall Street? Lots of complaints about the people shacking up and the various ramifications.
ReplyDeleteYour point is a good one though. I have observed this among young people for years....they viewed the 60s generation through romanticized prisms. Copying their behavior and their garb was and still is very popular.
Empty headed, they never had a "cause" to demonstrate about and now they think they do.
Only thing is they have no brains to figure out who the real criminals are.
