Schoen to Democrats: Don't Go Near the OWS Crowd!

Democratic pollster Doug Schoen is warning Obama and the Democrats not to go near the Occupy Wall Street movement. His organization conducted 200 interviews in Zuccotti Park and confirmed what most of us already knew. This is no Hoover era army of the unemployed. Most are employed and Schoen figures their unemployment rate to be 15 percent. Considering their demeanor and appearance that seems pretty low. Not surprisingly the majority of the demonstrators supported Obama in 2008 but now Obama is underwater with even this group with 51 percent disapproving of Obama juxtaposed 44 percent approving. Only 48 percent say they will vote for him in 2012 while almost a quarter say they won't vote. The common bond among the group is an affinity for radical politics, an opposition to free-market capitalism and support for radical redistribution of wealth, intense regulation of the private sector, and protectionist policies to keep American jobs from going overseas. Sixty-five percent view free health care as a right.

The really frightful findings, for those few Democrats with enough sense to feel fright, is 98 percent believe in civil disobedience and 31 percent condone violence to further their political ends. Go ahead Obama, run with the ninety-niners! Schoen, being a traditional Democrat instead recommends;

"Rather than embracing huge new spending programs and tax increases, plus increasingly radical and potentially violent activists, the Democrats should instead build a bridge to the much more numerous independents and moderates in the center by opposing bailouts and broad-based tax increases

Put simply, Democrats need to say they are with voters in the middle who want cooperation, conciliation and lower taxes. And they should work particularly hard to contrast their rhetoric with the extremes advocated by the Occupy Wall Street crowd."
