Ohio Has Three New Producing Wells
This blog sees the Utica Shale play as very bright star in Ohio's future. A virtual supernova! Accordingly as information becomes available we'll report it although much of it may be less than earth shaking. As of now there are three producing in the Utica Shale play. No production figures are available. Oil and gas producers are not required to report production to Ohio Department of Natural Resources; only drilling. So with all the literary aesthetics of a livestock market report I'll lay out the facts. Carroll County has two producing wells and Harrison County has one. These are the result of permits issued in late 2010 or early 2011. Thirteen permits have been issued in Columbiana County. Five of those permits are for horizontal drilling, which is executed using the hydraulic fracturing process. Eight permits have been issued in Mahoning County. We will update as more news becomes available.

But I don't understand the role of the EPA in all this. I keep hearing they put a stop to any and all drilling. I've even heard of people trying to stop fracking, complaining that the fracking causes oil/gas to leach into their water systems and they've gotten sick (humbug). So what's the role of the EPA and the feds? Will and can they put a stop to this? They seem eager to stop all business in this country, not to mention oil and gas.
ReplyDeleteNo the EPA is specifically excluded from any regulation of drilling. It's been the law I think since the mid nineties. As far as I know 1 farm well has been contaminated. Even there the facts aren't clear but the oil company has water delivered to his farm. The more the boom expands the harder it's going to be to stop it. Bob Casey wouldn't dare shut down down drilling in Pa. and soon no Senator from Ohio will either. If they next Congress and next President will permit drilling in the Baltimore Canyon they can put North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey in that column. Damn drilling in Anwar! The Senate votes are in the lower 48. Drill in as many congressional districts as possible.
