Toledo’s median house price is $127,852. Lots are large. Above-ground pools abound. Toledo is on a beautiful river, the Maumee, and Lake Erie is clean again. There are 17 marinas and 42 public golf courses nearby. The art museum has one good example of every great kind of art. The WPA-crafted, 51-acre zoo has the only Kihansi spray toad in captivity. The empty downtown has been used for a posh minor-league ballpark. The Mud Hens, if not always first in the league standings, are first on the list of great T shirts. There’s a symphony orchestra, opera, and ballet. And the people of Toledo are the friendliest on earth. Or so I’d say if my experience of Dayton, Youngstown, Terre Haute, and Kalamazoo hadn’t shown me that friendliness is universal in the junkyards of American capitalism.There's something to be said for having grown up in this area. It's usually quiet, there are LOTS of places to eat, people are provincial (if somewhat stodgy, harrumph), there IS entertainment (live, theater, opera, concerts), hockey and people get along pretty well. Not a lot of traffic. Lots of places to hang out and shop. People are friendly here, though Toledo tends to vote the same security blanket of politicians in year after year.
