The truth about the cost of a gallon of gas

We're all waiting for August 19, Cost of Government Day.
  What's that, you say?
That's the day we've paid for all government taxes and services.
  WalletPop:
Thurs., Aug. 19 marks this year's "Cost of Government Day." The date, calculated by the Americans for Tax Reform, signals when the average American finishes paying off his or her respective share of federal, state and local taxes, and the cost of implementing government regulations. This year, that means a whopping 231 days -- or almost 2/3 of the year -- are spent paying to keep the country going.
That's 63.41 % of every dollar you make.
  To pay for government.
And YOU! you whiners! You think the government takes too much of your check and YOU! you whiners! you want smaller government!
  Whiners.
And you're complaining about the cost of a gallon of gas?
Well, you heard The One (our president) complain that under his "plan energy costs would skyrocket."
You've heard liberals complain that our gas needs to cost more because then we'd use less gas.
  Yeah.
  You heard that.
Because when you have piles of cash like they do, either taxpayer funds or your private stash, flying around the world is no biggie, no matter how much gas costs.
But for us, the people on the street, the pavement, a $4 gallon of gas is a big deal.
So why does a gallon of gas cost so much?
I dunno. Maybe it's that our government went from $850 billion in circulation to over $5 trillion. Maybe it's that we aren't allowed to know how much money Obama has printed to giver to the IMF. Maybe it's that the cost of everything will be going up because our dollar has lots its value because of these irresponsible policies.
And those nasty oil companies who find the oil, excavate it, bring it to market? The ones who actually do the work of bringing it to the local station?
That would be 7 cents per gallon of gas the oil companies make.
You might be interested to know this, however:
Through the combination of state and federal taxes, the government collects an average 48 cents on each gallon of gasoline sold in the United States.Gasoline taxes are far higher in some states, such as California and New York, where motorists pay about 66 cents. Taxes are even higher on diesel, which fuels commercial transportation.By contrast, during the first three months of this year, for every gallon of gasoline and other products ExxonMobil refined and sold in the United States, we earned about 7 cents.
So wow. That's a lot of money the government makes, compared to the oil companies.
  But wait.
Yeah, Chuck Schumer says we need to pull the "subsidies" from the big ole nasty oil companies.
Only thing is, those aren't subsidies. Tax benefits maybe.
  But not subsidies.
  Hot Air:
Contrary to what some in politics and the media have said, the oil and natural gas industry currently enjoys no unique tax credits or deductions. Since its inception, the US tax code has allowed corporate tax payers the ability to recover costs and to be taxed only on net income. These cost recovery mechanisms, also known in policy circles as “tax expenditures”, should in no way be confused with “subsidies”, i.e., direct government spending.
  In fact:
The chart above is based on data from the API and shows that oil companies face a much higher income tax burden as a share of before-tax earnings (41.1%) compared to other S&P Industrial corporations.  Keep in mind that oil companies pay a higher effective tax rate than even the highest corporate marginal income tax rate of 35% because they are also paying state income taxes and foreign income taxes.   And there are also royalties, bonuses bids, excise taxes and other transfers to governments that aren't even included in the 41.1% tax expense rate.
To clarify: a tax break is not a subsidy. No taxpayer money comes from the treasury or the printing press to pay a "subsidy" to oil companies to keep the energy flowing, yet even the New York Times shills for liberals who are claiming it is so.
These are just lies and the purpose is what it always is with community organizers: create disharmony, class warfare and envy, while benefiting themselves politically.
What's particularly despicable is the people trumpeting these stories know the truth and they're trying to fool all of us.
Only we're not so uninformed anymore.
