Santorum's two houses

Rick Santorum, it appears, owns two homes: one in Pennsylvania and one in Virginia.
These homes have been the source of controversy, considering that he claims to live in the one in Pennsylvania but no one appears to be living there.
There's a particularly mean spirited and biased account here.
Santorum was criticized by his opponent in the last congressional race, which Santorum lost. Not sure I trust some "neighbors" who have a political ax to grind:

"This is not to say that he doesn't visit Penn Hills from time to time. But while he may meet the legal requirements for residency, his home is in Virginia with his wife and children. This is well-known and it has been for quite a while. Indeed, it was at the heart of the objection by some Penn Hills residents to the local school district paying for the senator's children to be enrolled in a cyber charter school."
Under intense legal and political scrutiny, the Junior Senator was forced to return $104,767 to the school district..

Continuing to object that Santorum continues to  live in Virginia, two local democrats Ed and Erin Vecchio, residents of Penn Hills, challenged the right of Rick and Karen Santorum to vote at his precinct in the recent Republican primary on the grounds that the Santorums were not actually residing in Vecchio's precinct.

Apparently only Democrats are supposed to get rich from their contacts, because Santorum is being criticized for having made mucho bucks in the last year. Bloomberg:

Since his 2006 re-election defeat, the former Pennsylvania lawmaker has gone from being one of the poorer members of the U.S. Senate to earning $1.3 million between January 2010 and August 2011. In 2007, he spent $2 million to buy a 5,000-square foot home in Great Falls, Virginia, according to property records.
Santorum’s financial rise was powered by consulting contracts with fuel producer Consol Energy Inc. (CNX), faith advocacy group Clapham Group and American Continental Group, a Washington consultancy, as well as media engagements.
The long knives are out for Santorum, as the Left seeks to discredit anyone who opposes Obama.
Santorum's politically conservative postures make him vulnerable to bizarre attacks, including a Google bomb that implies Santorum's gay. Wow. That's cute and very original.

  1. Kevin over at Hillbuzz has an interesting post on the two houses. Evidently they were a big issue in the 2006 election. I've wondered for sometime how he managed to lose so badly in his last race and that explains it.
