UK studies cited as proof conservatives are stupid

So is you were reading Yahoo News, you might have found this headline:

Low IQ & Conservative Beliefs Linked to Prejudice

  Yes, kiddies, it's true.
You're stupid if you don't agree with social liberals.
The fact that you're stupid has been suggested, even drilled into our society, over and over. In our schools, our universities, the elite who write the laws.
They all live and function in the same dang circle, rubbing each others' massive egos until they swell even bigger, drink expensive wine with their pinkies extended and cluck over the problem of social conservatives.
You're stupid if you don't want to pay more taxes, want to reduce the size of government because EVERYBODY knows bigger government is better because it can do so MUCH for us, like tell us how low to wear our pants and what to eat for dinner.
You're stupid if you value your independence.
Now Yahoo is relying on one Stephanie Pappas at Live Science to objectively explore, even while acknowledging controversy, the facts that link conservatism with low IQ. Of course, liberals get to define "bias" and "prejudice," an you know how that goes. Everybody's a bigot.
The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.
What facts are these, you might ask, blindly fumbling for some rationale for your dumb politics?
If you shrink from pictures of people eating worms, you're probably a conservative.
Setting aside the fact that LiveScience links to and refers to itself to verify its "research," note the following:
Most people would likely avert their eyes when passing by a man with a mouth full of writhing worms, or, say, the sight of a pile of excrement. But some are more disgusted than others, and new research suggests those individuals who respond with a more intense "yuck" are more likely to hold conservative political views and specifically are more likely to oppose same-sex marriage.
"This is one more piece of evidence that we, quite literally, have gut feelings about politics," said study researcher Kevin Smith, a political science professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. "Our political attitudes and behaviors are reflected in our biology."
So if you're grossed out by a pile of steaming sh#t or really intensely dislike people eating worms, this proves that your conservatism is ignorant.
Because, really, eating worms and stinking sh$t are part of being a liberal.
  Now that's real tolerance.
And what about drinking donkey semen?
Now that'd be REALLY stupid, wouldn't it.
  NOBODY would do THAT.
The world may never see "Fear Factor" contestants chugging donkey semen -- corporate heads at NBC and its parent company Comcast are having serious 11th hour talks about pulling the episode.
As TMZ first reported, contestants on the show -- shot last summer -- are challenged to drink a glass of donkey semen (and one of urine) ... and several of them did. Theepisode is scheduled to air Monday night.
Does that mean I'm stupid because drinking stuff like that grosses me out?
Note some of the questions ask to determine prejudice and ignorance:
Social conservatives were defined as people who agreed with a laundry list of statements such as "Family life suffers if mum is working full-time," and "Schools should teach children to obey authority." Attitudes toward other races were captured by measuring agreement with statements such as "I wouldn't mind working with people from other races." (These questions measured overt prejudiced attitudes, but most people, no matter how egalitarian, do hold unconscious racial biases; Hodson's work can't speak to this "underground" racism.)
Yeah, so if you think moms working full time aren't necessarily the best thing for kids then you're stupid and a conservative.
So in addition to primarily citing their own research and experts, the "scientists" in charge of these studies got to write the questions, determined by their own prejudices against conservatives.
One might note that the two studies cited were in the UK but are said to be determinative of all conservatives.
  Nyuck, nyuck.
Now that don't sound stupid, do it?
Take a look at how this meme spreads, cited by other "authoritative" sources.

  1. I'm not convinced you read the whole article, or maybe you didn't understand what you were reading. The authors did not say conservatives were stupid, in fact one is quoted as saying "There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals."

The default position on anything for the person who possesses little knowledge is to be conservative, because without knowledge fear is the overriding basis of action and/or inaction, and the fear-based person is more likely to hold prejudices and act in ways to preserve the status quo. Over time as knowledge is accumulated a person may become either conservative or liberal or somewhere in between. The research here is obviously focused on the first category of person, the ignoramus.

Does this make sense to you?

  2. Anonymous: The "researcher" claims that the results of his study indicate that low IQ individuals are drawn to racist attitudes via certain political ideologies.

This begs the question: Was Barack Obama drawn to the racist teachings of Reverend Wright because of low IQ, his left wing ideology ... or both?

  3. The superiority in your tone that I didn't read the article or simply didn't understand what I read makes me want to not respond to this but I will, because I am a fairly tolerant person when it comes to a good argument.

Conservatism is not a default position. Being moderate is a default position, primarily because many people simply aren't paying attention to the world around them, outside their own parameters.

You may say this research is focused on the ignoramus rather than the conservative in general, but if you take a look at the Google links that have been spawned by this article, it becomes obvious that the article--its title alone is evidence of this--is to promote the POV that conservatives in general are stupid. DailyKos is having a Dailyspas over it,naturally.

Other articles cited by this article claim far left wingers never swing over to the right. This is simply not true. There are numerous reformed liberals on the right.

You'll note that after issuing the caveat not to stereotype people, as you suggest in your first paragraph, the article goes on to...stereotype people, which is really the whole point, after all, isn't it? Sneak it in there, inoculate yourself from accusations of bias by throwing in a line or 2 about not stereotyping and you're off.

See, when YOU are the one who gets to determine the definition of "bias," and YOU get to write the questions and YOU get to determine what the CORRECT answer is, you aren't going to get an accurate reading of the individual you claim to be studying who, naturally, won't understand what you're doing because they have TROUBLE GRASPING THE COMPLEXITY OF THE WORLD.

    From the same article:

Nonetheless, there is reason to believe that strict right-wing ideology might appeal to those who have trouble grasping the complexity of the world.

"Socially conservative ideologies tend to offer structure and order," Hodson said, explaining why these beliefs might draw those with low intelligence. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice."

  4. An excellent point, RightKlik! Perhaps, however, in your conservative, um, stupidity, you weren't aware that a FAIR world has determined that only WHITE people can be racist.

Therefore if you hate people of other races, it only counts if you're white and conservative. Therefore Rev. Wright is inoculated from racism.

They're all smarter too. Just so you know.

  5. Just keeping with the general tone of this blog, sorry if the superiority coming from the other direction rubs you the wrong way.

John Stuart Mill famously wrote: "Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative." Conservatism IS a default view, but not in relation to complex things like trade policy or tax policy. It is in relation to how one perceives things and people one has some direct relationship to, and this is what the study is getting at. So if someone is different from you and you are a low IQ person, you are much more likely to regard that person not with understanding but with fear. And fear breeds contempt.

Also interesting is that decades of social psychology research shows some strong differences exist between liberals and conservatives in how they view the world. Also, unequivocal research shows that we do not make decisions about things with anywhere near as much rational thought as we would like to think, and that is due to how our brains work and take in information. Being conservative or liberal has way more to do with psychology, upbringing and experiences rather than weighing the evidence and coming to rational conclusions.

Conservatives in general have a harder time seeing things from a perspective outside of their own, and there is evidence that this might be hard wired-in for some. This is why the right in this country is so successful at crafting simple basic messages that stick like gorilla glue in the minds of the true believers and get them fired up. Liberals have more difficulty in swaying voters to move en masse in any particular direction because liberals tend to be more educated and less susceptible to propaganda.

The article and the study have to be taken separately, you seem to conflate the two. Somehow the field of social psychology and the Media Industrial Complex are conspiring to tarnish conservatives?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Liberals have difficulty swaying voters because liberals have ruined every city and state they've run into the ground. Every entity in this country is broke. Broke. Detroit is a great example of liberal overreach and decadence.

I've been extensively educated by the standard university methods and I have to tell you I've seen lots of stupid degreed people who see things only from their own point of view. For you to claim that academia is less susceptible to propaganda is hilarious. Today's colleges have deteriorated into nothing BUT propaganda, except in perhaps some areas of business. Certainly economics has been overrun with the Keynesian baboons. How absurd to think the government can or should provide everything for everyone.

OTOH, the smartest people I've ever met are self educated (some with degrees) people who happen to be conservative. Some also happen to be liberal.

And, yes, your last sentence is correct. It's a conspiracy.

And as far as the "tone" of this blog.

We write for information dissemination, we write for partisan reasons and we write because we enjoy politics and contemporary events. We certainly are partisan.

Anyone who's honest will admit such a thing. We just try to be civil about our disagreements. I certainly don't hang out at liberal blogs, trying to throw water on their notions of "fairness" and the like. I figure, "Hey. This is what they think. It's ok with me."

I'm just sorry that liberals aren't open minded enough to allow people to make their own decisions and control as much of their lives as possible. That's my main objection to liberalism.

They try to control everybody's lives because they know better than everyone else.

  7. I'm going to point out some things that don't help your cause in the view of a "liberal" point of view. Not to start a fight but because I'm genuinely curious as to why you think certain things. Too many people are conservatives for it to be completely wrong so I'm hoping to understand more and hopefully become a smarter person having done so.
I'm genuinely not trying to start a fight.

"Every entity in this country is broke. Broke"
-That's incorrect English. You should have said "broken". Poor language is an immediate sign to Liberals that the person they're dealing with may not be very intelligent.

"Certainly economics has been overrun with the Keynesian baboons. How absurd to think the government can or should provide everything for everyone."
-Government providing "everything for everyone" is Communist, not Keysian, economics. Keynes advocated the "nightwatchman" state where free market capitalism would reign until the boom/bust cycle (something all economists agree on being a natural part of capitalist economics) bottoms out and then the government should step in to give the economy a kick-start but once it's running again the government once again recedes into the background. (Whether or not the government actually cedes it's control in reality is immaterial when speaking in definitions of terms).

"I'm just sorry that liberals aren't open minded enough to allow people to make their own decisions and control as much of their lives as possible."
-That's a confusing sentence. I know what you mean but it's poorly worded.
-Liberals tend to be the ones who support people living their lives as they like (eg gay people, ethnic minorities etc) and want everyone to have equal rights to life since we're all people. Conservatives are the ones (and not all of them by any means but the ones on TV definitely) who routinely say that the way certain people are living is wrong and that they need to change the way they're living. The hate-speech that came out of the Republican candidates debate regarding gay people for example. That seems like a literal example of controlling "as much of their lives as possible" to me.

    I await your response.

  8. O. M. G.

Is it possible you don't know that "broke" and "broken" are two different words and have different meanings? "Poor" language and speaking in the vernacular are also different.

Not everything about Keynesian, or as you put it, "Keysian," is wrong but it is getting us where the commies/Keynesians/socialists want us to go.

These policies all serve the same purpose, right? Dependence on governmental entities to provide even the basic necessities of life. The breakup of the family is encouraged by welfare and government policies.

Whether or not the government actually cedes its control IS material. Everywhere we go are nattering nabobs and new rules and regulations, trying to control us until we can't even breathe on our own. How can you say it's immaterial? Bah. You're fooling yourself. An academic, I'm guessing, or a writer for Live Science or something.

As far as my wording goes, would it help you to simply consider me an uneducated rube? Fine. Go ahead. A doctoral dissertation my blog posts are not.

You maybe haven't been actually WATCHING what liberals are doing these days. In the past, it may have been true that the class liberal was actually open minded but they certainly haven't evolved that way.

Liberals, RINOs and Dems, feel good about their regulating sugar, exercise, CC, weight, diet, taxes, flying, driving, TAXES, commerce, health insurance. Need I go on?

You also are suffering under a media created stereotype definition of what a conservative is. Conservatives don't have a problem with what gay people and ethnic minorities, etc, do with their lives. I don't give a flying pig's rear end what people do in their bedrooms, gay friends and all.

What I have a problem with is the indoctrination, particularly of children. AND there's nobody more hateful on the earth (well, that's a generalization) than a liberal who doesn't understand why Christians oppose gay marriage or how a black man can be a Republican.

Just read Kevin DuJan if you want to find out what it's like to be gay and conservative. Ditto Black conservatives. And strong female conservatives. Look what liberals do to them. Despicable.

As a liberal, YOU get to determine the meaning of "hate" speech, which is anything YOU don't like. If I oppose gay marriage, it MIGHT be on religious grounds, not HATE. And, contrary to some beliefs, I have a right to my opinion even if it doesn't coincide with political correctness. And, btw, for a lot of people, civil unions are not as objectionable as gay marriage. Forcing the church to bless behavior they consider immoral is, in itself, immoral and inappropriate.

Yet, YOU, as a liberal, want to control Catholics' opposition to birth control? I certainly believe in birth control NOT ABORTION, but I respect the rights of Catholics to believe the way they do. I don't want to change it just because...

Oh, btw, I could point out your writing flaws but I wouldn't want to demean you. That's because I'm a fairly tolerant person and love a good argument.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I would point out that "broke" is defined by the Oxford English dictionary, US edition, as "having completely run out of money" which I think is an apt description of the Untied States. Unlike your Canada where economic literacy and English precision are valued by the general population we here in the US have allowed our language to decline along with our currency.

  10. Part 1
"The breakup of the family is encouraged by welfare and government policies."
-You state this as a given but I don't see it that way. Can you provide some proof?

You accused me of being an academic like it's a bad thing. One of the things conservatives are most mocked for is that they seem to see being educated as a negative. Can you explain why we would see you guys this way or if it's true that conservatives feel this way, why you do? (also you got really defensive right afterwards. "would it help you to simply consider me an uneducated rube". Could that have something to do with it? That came off as condescending but I mean it genuinely. Could part of the distrust of academics come from feeling self-conscious about not being educated? Statistically conservatives have less formal education than liberals). I actually dropped out of university even though I had excellent grades because I feel that university is no longer a place to learn but a place to memorize what others tell you to believe. Which I have no interest in whatsoever. See? We have more in common than you thought.

"Forcing the church to bless behavior they consider immoral is, in itself, immoral and inappropriate."
-Agreed in the same way it'd be immoral to ask the KKK to sponsor the million man march. But politicians don't represent the church. They represent everyone in the country they've been voted to "lead". So saying that gays can't marry at all is hateful. Why? Because there's no reason outside of religion (which I see as a ridiculous reason to hate someone but that's just me) for saying that they can't marry. The only studies that "prove" that gay marriage has a negative effect on society are all funded by Christian oriented groups which creates the exact same dilemma that got you to start this post ("So in addition to primarily citing their own research and experts, the "scientists" in charge of these studies got to write the questions, determined by their own prejudices against conservatives.") in the first place. Forcing homophobic churches to marry gay people is dumb, granted. I don't really know why gay people would want to get married in those churches anyways but that's none of my business. However when someone can get married outside of the church with the same title and with all the same meaning and legal entitlements, it's ridiculous and petty that politicians would go out of their way to make it illegal. And it's only conservative politicians and pundits (the most popular ones at that) who do this. Once again I'm not saying that all conservatives are stupid or hateful but you've gotta see how this doesn't help your cause.
You make the same argument for birth control but that doesn't make sense. There's no law that says "All catholics have to wear birth control" and nor should there be, I can't think of anyone on either side who would argue that.

  11. Part 2

For the record, I'm not a liberal. That's why I put it in quotations. I agree with you that the name liberal and the people who operate under it's banner are often not what they pretend to be. But I think the same is to be said for conservatives. It's just become a word that doesn't mean what it used to. Compare the conservative literature today with that of Edmund Burke, arguably the father of conservatism. The difference is staggering. It may seem simply academic to talk about the meaning of these words but words are all we have to communicate with. So if we have different meanings for the same words, meanings that have been built up through divisive propaganda on both sides, the argument is eternal. That's why I made the distinction between Keynesian (spell check this time haha) and Communist economics. I genuinely think that that's why so-called conservatives and so-called liberals fight so much now when they used to get along ok. Most arguments between the two sides are now one making a generalization about the other and the other giving a ton of examples as to why that generalization doesn't work. Meanwhile I have friends on both sides but my left-wing friends don't tend to have right-wing friends (or even acquaintances) and vice versa. And yet each talks about the other regularly, while knowing little to nothing about them first hand. This divide is, if you'll pardon my french, fucking everything up. That's why I genuinely want to understand why you think what you do. And I encourage you (and your readers) to do the same with left-wing blogs. Be genuinely curious and a lot of the myths of both sides will fall away. And then maybe something can actually be done to improve our systems and thus the lives they affect/control.

    Thoughts?

I'm Chris by the way. The anonymous makes this so impersonal.

  12. Chris:

Statistically families have been damaged by the welfare state. You can go here for an essay (http://www.city-journal.org/html/15_3_black_family.html) but also think about what the welfare state encourages.

Young women don't get married because they can "survive" on welfare. Unfortunately I have real life experience with a relative and this mentality. It didn't end well.

Look at the increase in unmarried women. Think about the way families were in the 30s and 40s. Poverty didn't break apart the family. Welfare and government dependency did. What's the percentage of children born into single motherhood? Just Google it and you'll find out. I have a friend who subbed at an inner city Toledo elementary school, where the Black principal said the worst thing those students face is the white folks who come down there and hand out stuff free. White guilt. The principal said those kiddies need to learn how to work and survive on their own. BTW, the friend caught a 9 year old kid trying to kill the janitor. It was the way things worked in his world. Imagine.

I also knew a white kid who had 7 children by different mothers. Don't worry, he told me. The government will take care of them. This is a true story.

As far as believing that statistically liberals are more "educated" than conservatives, I simply don't believe you.

My father had little formal education yet was one of the most intelligent, informed people I have ever known. Liberals tend to flock toward the college environment because they are not only accepted there but nurtured. Conservatives are not. Believe me, I know, as it appears from what you said that I am far more educated than you.

Thus my distrust of academics comes from EXPERIENCE, not self consciousness of being uneducated. But you're absolutely right about what "university" has become. Repeating the opinions/bilge they want you to say. In general, so is high school.

Do you not know any educated conservatives? There are many, not the least of whom is Thomas Sowell. Unfortunately I seem to have more experience in this field than you and that is why, perhaps, I am so contemptuous of the "ivory tower" mentality, something that is also encouraged by the union mentality. It is insularity at its worst.

  13. AND:

And why consider others' opinions if you have no one in your proximity who represents those opinions?

I have a lifetime of contact and close friends who are not conservative. To be honest, it's probably easier to talk to young liberal people than older ones, though many liberals do not tend to be well informed, especially when it comes to conservative opinions or divergent POVs.

And of course, the word "conservative" means different things in different environments. I wouldn't be considered conservative in Iran, for certain, but rather liberal.

And you can't see how someone can not approve of gay marriage and not be homophobic? The two are not necessarily the same, although that's probably true for some people.

I had a friend who said once, "My daughter's on welfare. It's so sad because it's barely enough to live on." I said, "But isn't that the point? So we encourage people to move on, off the government teat and into the work world again?

I'm very concerned about the direction of this country. There's more money going out than coming in. We're mortgaged up to the hilt. We're creating a monster debt for our children. The health care program is going to bankrupt us...farther, if that's possible. In addition, there WILL be "death panels," in which, like England, some remote group of people will decide who is or isn't worthy of treatment.

And, like the rusting Soviet states, the top of the ladder will get the good apartments, the nurturing lessons and the excellent health care. The rest of us won't.

Those are just facts. There is so much phoniness in these arguments (not yours, but rather the Occupiers and the unionists) that I can hardly tolerate it, much as I try.

I don't believe in hiding from the truth although I certainly approach life a certain way.

If you think about it, the two opposites--conservative vs. liberal--are pretty much universal. A tug of war that's gone on for centuries.

And you're right that we've become more polarized. I believe Obama has encouraged that, with his class warfare and constant mean spirited attacks.

But I appreciate your comments. They mean a great deal and seem honest and forthright, though condescending at times.

So I'll get off my high horse and correspond without barbs, if I can.

As to your suggestion to hang around liberal websites...eh. Nuh uh. It's pretty nasty over there, and unreasoning at a lot of those places.

I prefer discussing the issues with reasonable people. Nice to meet you, Chris.
