All across Ohio, schools are facing cuts, due to property tax reductions, cuts in state aid (no matter what the politicians say about increases) and generally bad economic conditions. In the case of Toledo, administrators are asking for a levy with the threat of cutting all sports. In Detroit, outside forces have stepped in to provide resources (one wonders how THAT will work), in spite of the miserable performances of both teaching staff and students.
One problem is that the state has mandated many new changes in education without funding them. The most immediate is the demand to establish all day kindergarten; most districts cannot afford this. In fact, it is estimated that it would cost districts state wide over $700 million.
At least Perrysburg is doing what needs to be done: not spending money we do not have, unlike the federal government, which continues to blow money on unbelievable projects.
