It probably wouldn't occur to most rational people that photo ID's were discriminatory but whoever thought Democrats were rational. Sure Debbie Wassermann Schultz said they were a throw back to the Jim Crow days when presumably blacks were asked to produce photo ID's before they could sit at the dime store lunch counter. We all know what bothers Democrats is anything that might impair their ability to cheat. This issue has already been to the Supreme Court and the Court agrees that fair elections are a good thing but the Justice Department does not. At the behest of Sen Bennett of Colorado ( "These measures have the potential to block millions of eligible American voters," ) DOJ began to monitor states considering adopting photo ID laws.
Testifying at a Senate hearing on September 13, Justice Department Civil Rights Division chief Thomas Perez said the Department has begun those investigations and is scrutinizing not just the laws themselves but the motives of those who passed them to discover whether "there is a discriminatory purpose that underlies any action in any state."
Surprise there is one block of voters who are not down with that idea! That block would be Hispanic voters. As part of a larger poll on Hispanic attitudes respondents were asked; "As you may have heard, many states are considering laws that would require registered voters to present photo identification, such as a driver's license, in order to cast their vote. Do you support or oppose those laws?" In Florida 88 percent of respondents answered in the affirmative. In Colorado, which is Senator Bennett's home state, the law was favored by a 71 to 26 percent margin. In New Mexico the poll broke 73 to 25 percent in favor of voter photo ID laws. Let's hope Republicans are smart enough to read this poll.
