Putting Tucson into perspective

As reason begins to return to the debate and others continue digging in further into their neuroses, too much good commentary today to write too much about it. Follow these links.
Sarah Palin hanged in effigy in 2008.
Salon editor begins to walk back the conversation, as we knew leftists would as soon as became apparent that the murderer was left leaning.
Before 2 family members were even notified about the deaths of their loved ones, Sheriff Dupnik was claiming on air that it was right wingers and talk radio who were guilty of inflaming a nut like Loughner. Who's creating the climate of hate? Losing the political argument, leftists are eagerly claiming responsibility is on the right for violence.
Speaking of violence, there's an excellent essay over at Human Events by Hayward about the reality of this situation, the true climate of hate and Paul Krugman's (the NYT) part in creating it. Hayward also reminds us of some violent rhetoric in the past. Who said these things, I wonder, and just because YOU didn't hear about violence associated with the remarks doesn't mean it didn't happen. After all, violence against the right rarely gets much attention. From Human Events:
If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun. – June 2008.
I want you to go out and talk to your neighbors… I want you to argue with them, get in their faces. – September 2008.
I don’t want to quell anger.  I think people are right to be angry.  I’m angry. – March 2009.
If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, “We’re gonna punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us,” if they don’t see that kind of upsurge in voting in this election, then I think it’s gonna be harder, and that’s why I think it’s so important that people focus on November 2. – October 2010.
And a reminder: who was hoping for a disaster the proportion of Oklahoma City or 9/11 to help The One put his presidency into perspective?

More evidence is emerging that Loughner was indeed a left leaning pothead who was obsessed with Giffords, and that he had been planning for quite some time to confront Giffords, long before Sarah Palin was even on the scene. Yahoo.
  Another perspective.
And, hey, say what you want about old people, but WHO took down that 22 year old monster shooter? It was old people. A 74 year old retired Army guy. A 61 year old woman. And another man, as yet unnamed.
  Rock on, baby boomers.

  1. You know, I have always thought it was Hubert Humphrey who provided the visceral impetus for Sirhan Sirhan just as Adlai Stevenson inspired Sarah Jane Moore.

  2. But let's remember who SIRHAN SIRHAN was, in retrospect and considering the situation today.
On something other than a philosophical scale, though, each individual is responsible for his or her own behavior.
I'm certainly not inspired to commit heinous deeds because Keith Olbermann is such a jerk.
This guy was a nut, certifiable. If we're going to play the blame game, though, it's that sheriff who didn't have a clue that the guy was a menace to society.
