While the respected Anchoress encourages Sherrod to write a book about her life experiences (the murder of her father by a white man, the rising above the racial components of society), rushing to Sherrod's side is still difficult for many of us.
Repeated in our heads are the phrases, "He thought he was superior to me." and "I sent him to one of his own."
Over at NRO online, Andy McCarthy takes apart her speech, regarding it in its full context. Taken in conjunction with her "I"m the victim" comments on the morning talk shows, Sherrod does not necessarily come across as a sympathetic, non-racial character. She appears to be someone who bears racial grudges, or at least class grudges.
To put this into perspective, if a white man had repeatedly referred to someone being taken care of by their "own kind," outrage would have been manifested nationwide.
On a wider scale, the talk about racial matters has been quite fascinating and disturbing at the same time. It becomes obvious that the racial divisions in the country are deep. The post-racial president many of us hoped for is on vacation, or at a party, or golfing.
In one sense, there's nothing really wrong with people who want to stay with "their own kind." A Polish quarter (Tony's Packo) is a Polish quarter; they're surrounded by people they love and with whom they can identify.
What's wrong is when people deny or sabotage others over their race; if people are only seen through the prism of race, then they are not truly seen at all.
Skin color is a component of who someone is; there's no denying it. We DO have things to learn from one another. There still IS discrimination in this country, magnificent though she may be.
But today the discrimination that is MOST PROMINENT, MOST PERNICIOUS, and MOST ANOINTED is the discrimination against conservatives and Christian/Catholics/Jews.
For example, when did anti-semitism become mainstream? When did it become okay to mock people because they did not follow the liberal herd? When did it become BELIEVABLE that conservatives are more likely to accept the company line than liberals?
One read over at the Daily Caller expose on the liberal Journolist ought to dispel that notion. They run in a herd. They think alike. They are drones, robots, prominent in the MSM as independent thinkers.
But back to Andy McCarthy at NRO. It was difficult to choose which paragraphs to feature here because he is so on target. Please read the whole thing here. The first is quoting Ms. Sherrod (they being white people-mean spirited means if you voted for McCain):
McCarthy:
So, in Sherrod World, mean-spririted, racist Republicans do nasty things that "we" would never do because we have a president who, being black, is above that stuff. Still, we have-nots need to band together for "change" because a cabal of haves, desperate to keep their power, is still imposing their centuries old capitalist system of institutionalized racism — the same racism that courses through the Republican Party and surfaces on "us versus them" issues like healthcare.A final question: Where is Barack Obama? Why doesn't he shut this down? Why doesn't he stop the race baiting? Why doesn't he encourage people to see beyond the color of skin?
Why?
