The FBI raids continue. At least two more Democratic office holders were subjected to federal raids. The FBI refused to comment on the reason for the raids. Queens assemblyman William Scarborough was rousted out of his Albany motel room. at 5:45 AM. His smart phone was confiscated and his capital office and home were searched as federal agents removed boxes of documents. Scarborough claimed the reason for the raid was the large per diem travel and lodging expenses he claimed in the past. One doubts if the FBI would devote a team of agents just to help the state of New York recover a few thousand dollars it may have overpaid the assemblyman. Legislators are paid $172 per diem when the Assembly is in session. How many days could he have fudged to attract the FBI's attention?
The raid in Gary Indiana seems, on the surface, equally petty. Agents from the FBI, IRS, and Indiana state police descended on the Calumet Township trustee's office and executed a sealed search warrant around 9:15 a.m. Township Trustee Mary Elgin opined the cause of action was an audit filed in April 2011 by the Indiana State Board of Accounts. Elgin has been criticized for hiring family members and her handling of assistance and other expenditures. That's a federal case? As in Scarborough's case there must be more to the story. Arrest of township trustees is not unusual in Indiana. Usually the crime is embezzlement and the trustee does a year or two and is ordered to make restitution. It barely makes the news.
One might question the reporter's objectivity when she asks, "Why do you think you 're being attacked?"
There is already the conspiratorial idea that Holder is getting all the Dems' sacrificial lambs out of the way in Spring so he can unleash a major October surprise dragnet against the GOP.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't discount that on the other hand this series of raids indicates possible coordination of these Dems in some sort of a national crime endeavor such as money laundering or drug dealing. The two raids in this post was nickel-dime stuff if we believe those being raided and the FBI won't comment. The IRS participated in the Gary raid? Why?
