"I'm a Yankee Republican,” explains Shays. “It’s a commitment to common sense, not ideology." So how's that working out for him? Yes, Shays can cry that Linda McMahon has outspent him in the Connecticut Republican primary but does that explain how he lost his congressional seat to Democrat Jim Himes? Yankee Republicanism is more of a marketing ploy than a political philosophy. Democrat Lite is more honest. RINOism is the sanctuary of career Republicans who put personal well being above party and principle.
Unlike Shays, McMahon is not encumbered by a political history. She could have run squishy. In fact Yankee Republicanism is the safer course in blue Connecticut. Rather than take the safe course McMahon seems to enjoy the rough and tumble of very partisan politics. She likes to fight. We all grew up with kids who could laugh off a bloody nose and McMahon seems to be one of them. Tomorrow Shays can resume is retirement and McMahon, we hope a new career.
