It seems like every neighborhood used to have a Michelle Obama. Yeah, she was the woman who knew what was best for everyone. Not content to just muck up her own children's lives she had to boss all the neighborhood kids. Steal your ball if she thought you were playing too rough. My mother used to say " She means well. Just smile and be nice to her. That's desert. As if there are huge swatches of the country that do not have, um, food, of something.
Part of Michelle Obama's goal in life is to bring sustenance to these food, um, deserts.
With a (for now) $400 million yearly food grant, Moochelle wants to bring fresh fruits and vegetables into the inner city, which she says suffers from a lack of real grocery stores:
Some people think that's a great deal of money for a questionable purpose (but what else is new about any government program?)
Since Moochelle is all about health, this is what she says:
"Right now, 23.5 million Americans, including 6.5 million kids, live in what we call 'food deserts' -- these are areas without a supermarket," she explained. "And as a result these families wind up buying their groceries at the local gas station or convenience store, places that offer few, if any, healthy options."But a study reveals this:
Only 0.1 percent -- one-tenth of one percent -- of Americans living in low-income areas more than 1 mile from a supermarket took public transit to the store, the report said.
For them, Mrs. Obama would create a new $400 million entitlement.Today "new partnerships" were announced to provide food for these food deserts. The well worn story M.Obama tells is utilized yet again over at ABC and Better Homes and Gardens, which the ABC blog gloats hasn't put a public figure on its cover for over 4 decades, as if that was something new for the numerous and Obamunctuous articles being printed in this country by newspapers and magazines.
M. Obama also reveals that living in D.C. has caused suffering on her part, but she's proud to say she's in "better shape than her husband": this is, apparently something that should interest us.
Mrs. Obama admits that life at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. took some getting used to and that she’s upped her workouts to make up for her more sedentary lifestyle. Now, however, she says she’s in better shape than her husband.
“I always tease him I’m in better shape than he is,” she says. “I can do long workouts. He’s the president,” she says.
The First Lady - who today is announcing new partnerships to bring more fruits and vegetables to “food deserts” - stresses that the home front is crucial to changing children’s eating habits. If the First Lady has the time and money to participate in truly invigorating exercise programs, that's great.
What's somewhat offputting is the fact that we have to hear about it all the time, regardless the shape of her figure. Woe be it unto us before we mention the shape of her figure unless the worshippers over at said ABC blog criticize us for mentioning, um, the shape of her figure.
So we'll just let that one go.
We'll also try to find an inner city store that has federally subsidized fruit and vegetables because we, too, like a good bargain and we, too, like those healthy foods soon to be ubiquitous in those food deserts. No doubt there will be lots unsold.
