It turns out that 36 percent of Democrats claim to have communed with the dead, and that 19 percent believe in casting a curse on someone using the "evil eye." Think about that: According Pew, more Democrats believe in the "evil eye" than Americans believe Obama is a Muslim.

19 % Dems believe in the "evil eye"?
As Thiessen says over at the Washington Post, you can find 20 percent of people anywhere who believe in almost anything. Of course, it was tremendous news when it was revealed that almost 18 percent of Americans believe Obama is a Muslim. Wonder if this will be as provocative a point as that, causing as it did liberal media commentators to wax eloquent about the evil internet, the stupidity of conservatives and the transparency of Dear Leader. More over at the Washington Post:

Actually, if you read the Pew research, you'll find that the reference to democrats is to acceptance of/belief in "Eastern or New Age beliefs" including the dreaded and suspect "yoga."

But, shoot, it's more fun to cast stones than read accurately.
BTW, it is my understanding that most "tea partiers" believe the "Sons of Liberty" were simply protesting all taxation, when in fact, they were protesting taxation _without representation_
For the record: we have representation and the right to vote.
PS, the Sons of Liberty were also protesting the overwhelming corporate power of the East India Tea Company.

There is no 'inc' in "We the People" or in "Of the people, by the people and for the people."
ReplyDeleteCorporations do a lot of good stuff, but they are "of the shareholders, by the employees, and for the shareholders." That is their legally defined purpose goal.
We the people need to take back our government from those who seek only to advance their corporate interests.
Well, the thing about a corporation is that its stated purpose is to produce something and make a profit from it. Let's face it--we all profit from that in some way by having good things to sell and buy and stocks that help fill the family coffers and pension plans. One hopes most business plans include some form of reaching out to humanity and a business model that values human lives more than profit. This is not always the case, of course.
ReplyDeleteOTOH, what does government do except interfere in our lives? Oh, you can say that government is needed to build roads, man a military and provide certain services, but we are at a point where it's RIDICULOUS when government wants to control the amount of salt we use and what our BMI is. These things produce nothing except undue pressure and nosy interference in citizens' lives. And you KNOW exceptions will be made for "certain people," all in the name of fairness or equality. But of course who gets to decide who those privileged folks are? Government.
No, it's not fair to take the fruit of my labors--my money, which represents my life and the way I spend my time--and blow it on some research about tsetse flies or Chinese male prostitutes.
To me, government is far worse than most corporations could ever be. The market has a tendency to take care of corporations. Who watches the government? When they don't even READ THE BILLS, who is there to stop them?
And what makes you say we need to take back government from those who seek to advance corporate interests? Corporate interests are determined by whatever party is in control. Can you HONESTLY say that ACORN isn't a corporate interest? They steal and cheat using government money.
No, we need to take our government from...corrupt politicians. I only hope we can find people who will not allow themselves to be corrupted to replace them.
