Reddit is going nuclear. In an recent post I mentioned the possibility that many in the online community including Google, FaceBook, and Amazon would go black on January 24 to bring attention to their opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its Senate companion bill, Protect IP. Reddit has announced that on January 18 its site will be down from 8 AM until 8 PM. The site will be black and message explaining how the two online piracy bills would shut down the site and links to ways users can take action to protest.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who has been outspoken about his opposition to SOPA, is among the witnesses scheduled to appear at Tuesday's hearing. Until very recently Congressman Darrell Issa was the only big name Congressman to oppose SOPA but now Paul Ryan has joined the opposition.
