Maumee 18 theaters close July 11
The 3-d went over to Fallen Timbers, which is extraordinarily hard to get to with all the stimulus projects and the closed exits. Since Fallen Timbers has been so poorly attended, it will be interesting to see where the crowds from Toledo go.
Personally, I believe that the "Maumee 18 Cinema DeLux" was the BEST theater in the Toledo area ever since the "Big 5" shut down many years ago. The one they should have closed is definitely the one at Fallen timbers; If any. The Fallen Timbers location is pretty far away for many, but moreover, the quality of the theater is very poor compared to the Maumee 18. Even if they do end up putting in an IMAX (Which i consider to be the pinnacle of a movie-goers experience) or other "large-format theater" in at the fallen timbers location, I would seriously debate making the trip and spending my money there.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely true. The cinema experience is simply not as enjoyable at Fallen Timbers, as well as the empty theaters.
ReplyDeleteLevis Commons is OKAY because it's local and friendly, but the real enjoyment of the theater, for me, had to be over at the Westgate Cinemas years ago because of the camaraderie of sharing a new movie experience (movies seemed more special then.)
I enjoyed Maumee too; they also had special events like the showing of all the Fellowship of the Rings movies in a marathon and really funny opening night events, like throwing out movie paraphernalia.
I don't feel theaters take advantage nowadays of the things we DON'T have at home...the friendly group environment, the surround sound, the paraphernalia. It's just like a big tv screen, only you can't mute the commercials.
The other mistake that was made was getting rid of the cheap cheap Super Cinemas. What a blast that was! Tons of people who wouldn't ordinarily go to theaters were there on the second run, primarily because of the expense, packing the theaters with their kids.
Yeah, theater people are pretty foolish these days. They want to pump up the price with stupid stuff like 3d but they don't make it any more FUN than it is at home.
And the closest IMAX is Detroit. I saw a 3d up there once that was AMAZING...years ago, and much better than Avatar or anything else currently showing.
