Warning that time is of the essence Senate Democrats have set up the Climate Action Task Force. And what exactly will the new action task force do? Talk. It plans to hold an all-night, filibuster-like talkathon on the issue of global warming. "Congress must act," Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz, a leader of the group, said in a statement. "On Monday night we're going to show the growing number of senators who are committed to working together to confront climate change.
Right but not committed enough to introduce any legislation. Even the ever gullible USA Today is confused.
The Democratic effort is cause for some confusion because these senators are calling for action in a chamber they control but without any specific legislation to offer up for a vote, or any timetable for action this year. They do control 55 senate seats so one would think it would be easy to bring legislation to the floor but this is an election year and this theatrical production is all about impressing wealthy donors not passing legislation. Of course those who will be needing the donations the most will not be a part of this public relations endeavor. Not even in the dark of night will Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Kay Hagan of North Carolina dare to help save the planet.
The Climate Action Task Force even has a web site and a list of little know experts save one, Nobel laureate Mikhail Gorbachev. Other than a minor mishap at an obscure nuclear facility called Chernobyl that happened on his watch the former Premier has his environmental bona fides in good order. I'm sure C-Span will telecast this so be sure to set your TiVo.
