We used to see little flashes of civil disobedience in the old Soviet bloc during the cold war. This scene from the Lincoln Memorial where ordinary Americans said enough, tore down the barricades and stormed the historic monument may be remembered for years. The shutdown has accelerated the divides between Washington and the hinterland, between private sector citizens and government workers, between government and the governed. The shutdown is only the latest reason to distrust government. A government that spies on its citizens through the NSA, subverts political dissent through the IRS, and wire taps reporters' phones deserves little respect. Yesterday it got just that.
And history is made!
Hurrah for the American spirit!
