Mike Pence for president? He would certainly get my vote. The Daily Caller is touting Indiana Governor Mike Pence as a 2016 presidential dark horse. I can find no evidence that Pence harbors such an ambition but it's a pleasant thought. Truthfully, Pence hasn't been in the Governor's Mansion long enough to judge his performance there. His congressional career is stellar from my conservative point view but Governor Mitch Daniels did not leave many challenges for his successor.
Daniels had a nerdy love for government. He would tinker with policy as if he were adjusting a carburetor. Just a little more performance, just a little smoother idle. He enjoyed governing and was a very able governor but I would wince when the Weekly Standard crowd suggested him as the Republican Party's nominee. He is the inverse of Obama. Obama loves campaigning and hates governing. Daniels loved governing but he has as much charisma as a fence post. He could give three speeches in an afternoon without notes and never repeat himself but he was all about information not inspiration.
Pence is personable. Much more so than Scott Walker and he is much more conservative than Chris Christie but both of those men inherited a mess. Daniels didn't leave messes so Pence's first term is apt to be short on drama but that would be a welcome change. If he decides to run I'm sure he would be in the top tier.
Pence vs. Bayh 2016. Or maybe there should be a third party, the Hoosier Party. They could be running mates.
ReplyDeleteBayh is term limited. He was governor twice. Really he wasn't that until he became a senator. He got rid of the auto excise tax which meant a big cash outlay every year before you could license your car.
ReplyDeleteBayh is kinduva milquetoast type of guy.He's smooth and an anti-Obama in the sense that he isn't all "I'm turning back the oceans."
ReplyDeleteMy reaction is that at some point, people are going to need to know that our POTUS really cares about jobs, our place in the world and, um, actually LIKES this country.
