CBC Chairwoman Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) sent an email Tuesday – via CBC staff – to CBC members asking them “to limit public comment on the issue,” Fudge spokeswoman Ayofemi Kirby said Thursday. But things are more complicated. CBC member Congresswoman Barbara Lee circulated a letter demanding that Obama get congressional approval before taking any military action against Syria. The letter was signed by 64 Democrats, 16 CBC members, and guess who? Congresswoman Marcia Fudge.
“The chair believes Congress and the American public need more information, and she awaits more briefings between now and early next week before commenting further,” Kirby said.
So why is Fudge working both sides of the street? Because the White House issued a gag order and the Chair of the CBC dutifully complied.
When asked if the White House requested the partial gag order, National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said "the Administration is reaching out to all Members to ensure they have the information they need to make an informed judgment on this issue."Eventually Obama probably will be able to bring the a large majority of the CBC along but this episode should show all who will see that Fudge's loyalty is to Obama and not the voters or Congress.
