Kerry; Spying on allies is not unusual

I'm glad he cleared that up for us. Secretary of State John Swiftboat Kerry says spying on allies is not unusual. Is it more unusual than locking up people who make YouTube videos critical of Islam?
To quote Kerry in full; "I will say that every country in the world that is engaged in international affairs and national security undertakes lots of activities to protect its national security and all kinds of information contributes to that. All I know is that is not unusual for lots of nations."
That went over like a pregnant pole vaulter with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. 'If it is confirmed that diplomatic representations of the European Union and individual European countries have been spied upon, we will clearly say that bugging friends is unacceptable.
More.
