Many of us out here in the hinterlands have been carefully following politics for quite some time now; the debates have offered an opportunity to party down. The rest of us either can't take any more politics or hunker down at home, nervously hoping our guy will be able to stand without falling asleep or passing out, at least through the whole 90 minutes.
Well, at least with Bob Dole and John McCain that was the concern. I mean, GEEZ, they were just the next guys in line to run for prez. Thank goodness the pizza guy was behind them.
Having had a couple days just thinking about the debates, absorbing what happened and observing the fallout, I have drawn several conclusions.
Frankly, Romney's articulate quick-witted responses have pretty much, well, been amazing. I wrote months ago that, as a businessman who has pulled troubled companies out of disaster (or helped closed them when their malfeasance had gone too far to be retrievable) Romney knows how to win.
Procedurally and organizationally he has built (and can build) the necessary structures to fix ailing businesses. He is proving this same point over and over in the debates.
We knew going on that this debate organization that selects "moderators" was made up of Democrats; we knew that the "moderators" would skew Democrat. This has all proven to be true. "Moderators" have interrupted Romney more often, have corrected Romney, have moved discussion toward the Democrat.
It's almost as if they not only can't help it, but can't even see that they're doing it.
As an observer, I have to say that it's become quite tiresome to hear commentators, particularly conservative, rattle on "What Romney should have said here is....."
Considering that Romney (unlike the rest of us) has been on top of the arguments throughout the debates; he has performed remarkably. That he is even where he is now in the polls is pretty, well, remarkable.
In this age of celebrities, most loud mouth celebrities have endorsed Obama, who also has the bulk of the media rooting for him, ignoring his numerous gaffes, misstatements and party mentality.
Obama is rarely questioned about his policies but Romney is. Comedians have had a field day with the "robot" Romney but have ignored the scarecrow Obama.
The economy is ignored. Gas prices are overlooked or treated as the new normal.
We know all this.
But what's developing in spite of all this is a preference cascade toward Romney, a growing public cynicism toward the media and extremely astute conservative blogosphere.
If you're a Tea Partier (secret or not), you know that there has been a ground shaking shift in the knowledge quotient of people who are really concerned about the direction of this country (not hte moochers, slackers and takers). Tea Party organizations, previously non-existent before Bush's TARP, sprang out of nowhere, continue to support candidates and win elections and are some of the most informed voters in this country.
We're hoping those in the media and on the Left are really not noticing what's been happening.
We're hoping they'll go on living in this dream world where they get to control everybody's lives forever.
We're hoping they'll go on believing Obama's going to win in less than 3 weeks.
Regardless the election results, Tea Partiers aren't going away. We'll continue to stick our noses into local, state and federal budgets, outcomes and direction.
We've been asleep too long. We're not going back. The time is too short.
