Romney Out Spending Santorum 29 to 1

Supposedly money can't buy love. Evidently it can't always buy an election either. The Washington Post reports that this week Willard Romney and his super PAC will spend $1,240,230 in Michigan as compared to Rick Santorum's outlays of $42,443. Before you reach for your calculator the ratio is 29 to 1. One suspects that although money is flowing into his campaign, Santorum must still count his pennies. Perhaps this speaks volumes about the electability of both men. If Romney cannot beat Santorum with the money so much in his favor how can he ever beat Obama when he will be at a profound financial disadvantage? In Santorum's case, here's a guy who rides all over Iowa in a pickup truck and wins the state and who leads in Michigan spending only $42,K per week and he doing it in Romney's home state.

The Weekly Standard blog notes that Romney has never been able to raise the small dollar donations depending instead on a relatively few number of wealthy establishment donors. That well has not run dry yet but the Romney camp has pretty much picked all the low hanging fruit and may soon have to hustle funds like everyone else. As one New York Republican put it, “There’s a shift here, and it’s driven by the amount of money he had to spend to pound each of his adversaries."

  1. The ads are ALL over radio and television. It's sickening. They're very mean spirited too. I just don't think he's gaining any traction in Michigan.
