The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 156 drilling permits in 2011, 80 of those coming in the last quarter, as the Utica shale boom heats up.
Ninety-two permits were horizontal permits which indicates that the operators intends to frack those wells. Carroll County led the way with 43 permits followed by Jefferson County with 19 and Columbiana County with 16. In all of 2010 ODNR issued just 3 permits. Carroll County hit the jackpot again when Select Energy Services of Houston, Texas announced an interest in acquiring about 30 acres for a facility that will bring 200 new jobs to the county by the end of 2012 .
