One doubts if Newt Gingrich considers modesty to be much of a virtue so why didn't he correct the questioner in the recent CNBC debate when he was asked about the $300,000 he received from Freddie Mac? Gingrich's take from that beleaguered mortgage GSE was in the $1.6 million to $1.8 million range beginning shortly after he left the House in 1999 and not ending until 2008. Though he is correct that he never registered as a lobbyist Gingrich's definition of consultant is somewhat strained. He received a monthly retainer between $25,000 and $30,000 to provide written material that could be circulated among free-market conservatives in Congress and in outside organizations. Maybe the term "propagandist" is a more accurate job description than consultant. More.
