Remember Virginia elects state legislators next week. The Democrats still control the upper house by a margin of 22 to 18. A shift of just two votes would give the Republicans control of the entire state government. Looking at it from a national point of view the loss of the state senate, especially by a wide margin would reflect upon Obama. Virginia Republicans are seeking to make the next elections a referendum on him as this ad illustrates.
Update: Jim Geraghty has an email from Jeremy Bird, national field director for Obama for America where the field director does not mention the word "Democrat" or even mention any of the candidates by name.
