It's a little off topic but southern Illinois had rural gangs during prohibition and there was nothing small time about them. I can remember shootings carried out by aged former gang members. Throw in John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers from Carbondale and a large Klan presence and southern Illinois was a pretty rough place.
